Amid the California State University, Los Angeles campus, sits building 12—historically designated as the Physical Science Building. Designed in the late 1960s, this eight-story tower was originally slated to be demolished upon completion of a new facility. After inspection, it was determined that the building could be refurbished for general academic use.
The two-phase project brought the building up to code for seismic movement—including the external plaza deck. The split-slab construction was fitted with a primary moisture barrier at the structural slab. Our Expanding Impregnated Seismic Foam System (EIS) was run across the top of the structural slab. The EIS System is designed to create a watertight seal across horizontal expansion joints while still offering movement capability for seismic events. A custom fabricated Surface Mount Metal Cover System (SP) was later installed over the foam to act as a protection plate and create a safe walking surface across the softer foam.
